I just realized i never did post an update on the the bfs mac...
Carbon couldn't find anything "wrong" with the mac. and it was given back. Since then every time you move it, the battery and power plug needs to be fiddled with just right so that it won't die within minutes. die as in, not only shuts down, but simply turns off. Needless to say, the MacBook is useless now except for watching movies and surfing... sometimes.. as with mine! a combined $8000 well spent!

from a friend...
i haven't updated in a while, mostly because i now have a PC on my desk that does the real work, and my mac is mainly used for surfing and msging, which is seems to be able to handle most of the time. but i thought i'd update this time with an email i received from a friend who recently put together a Hacintosh.
.....
fucking Mac!!!
Who the fuck wrote this crap, I was importing pictures into iphoto
from my server. My server being read only b/c I don't want a virus
wrapping out my photos. After an hour importing 700+ picture, iPhoto
gave me an error saying it couldn't write to folder containing the
photos... No shit Sherlock, couldn't they check before trying to
import the photos and wasted an hour of my time... Fucking Mac!!!

why do macs rebel against real work?
So its been a little while since i've been on a project that requires a "complicated" flash file (i guess complicated to mac is having more that 5 layers in a timeline).... not even 40 minutes into working, i try to move a shape and it crashes on me.
you know i was just getting to a point of not wanting to chuck this thing out the window, and now i realized it's because i haven't really been doing any "real" work on it.... our IT guy left........... no one will save you now mac... NO ONE!

... nearly a month later....
The bf's Macbook Pro was brought into Carbon Computing AGAIN...
The Symptoms:
Random shut downs, usually when the battery isn't charged all the way. It seems to stay on for the most part if it's fully charged and plugged in. But when it's half charged and plugged in, the computer doesn't always recognize the power, and even tho the little light on the adapter is green or orange, it doesn't actually charge, then shuts down. When it powers back up again, the power % says 0% then shoots to 20%.
So what do they do? They plug it in, switch it on, let it run, "do some tests", decide there's nothing wrong with it because they can't recreate the problem. They didn't even write down that the problem occurred most often when the it wasn't fully charged!! even tho it was clearly explained to them.
They also forget to call again, claiming that they did 4 days prior to us checking in.
We go in and explain it all over again to another guy... oh, well, it's gotta be a software problem! it can't possibly be the logic board EVEN THO THIS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE THEY REPLACED IT! are you seriously telling me that a computer which never had this problem before suddenly just developed a software problem within the hour that it came back from the shop after they replace the logic board?? OK so maybe it's not the logic board, but come on, seriously does this not sound suspicious to anyone else??
... call back tomorrow at 3:30 they say... we call back, they guy is away "sick" call back tomorrow after noon they say... we call back, they're running the tests "right now"... call back tomorrow .... this was 2 days ago... still no computer... still no resolution... still no phone call.
I suppose they're going to charge another 50$ for doing *$&% all.
Yes, Carbon Computing.

... it continues
They fixed the bfs mac... AND FORGET TO CALL HIM! When he calls them they say "it's been fixed since Monday, just sitting here on the shelf. How strange that no one called you. Ya, it's ready to go...." They replaced the logic board and the video card for FREE! He even got a refund onthe 50$ assessment fee.
So, why didn't this post end here? Well it's because.......
His computer shuts down randomly now! WOO HOO!
So, back to the store for another 2 weeks without his Mac.
Apparently it's a known problem.. this article is about 13" macbooks

why don't mac techs know what they're talking about??
Turns out that Apple has extended their warranty for the graphics card to three years even if your MacBook's warranty has expired...
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/05/30/apple_extends_old_macbook_pro_graphics_warranty_to_three_years.html
The guy at the licensed Apple dealer had no freaking clue! Funny thing is that you can't just bring your Apple to any old store they have to be these specialty tech shops, and they still have no clue. When we called bk to tell them about the article, the guy on the phone says "oh, yea, sorry there must have been a misunderstanding... we'll replace it if it's the graphics card" uh misunderstanding?? what was there to MIS-understand??! you right out told us that the whole computer had to be replaced if it was the video card because it was a known issue with Nvidia and they weren't going to do anything about it! and even told us the steps that we would have to take to sweet talk Apple into POSSIBLY replacing it for us! bah!

... AH HA! NOT JUST MINE ...continued....
after having to ride though a SERIOUSLY SCARY neighbourhood to get to the mac dealer in town due to closed main roads fearing that i was going to get snatched by some drunk man on the street in broad daylight, we heard the sad pre-diagnostic...
THE VIDEO CARD IS DEAD! and get this... the tech guy says that it's a known problem and NVIDIA won't take responsibility saying that apple should have made stronger fans to cool their graphics cards, therefore they will NOT replace them. AND APPLE WON'T REPLACE THEM IF THE COMPUTER'S WARRENTY IS EXPIRED!!!
ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS?!?!?!??!?!!?
both companies KNOW that there are computers out there that they have sold as "TOP OF THE LINE COMPUTERS" for OVER FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS EACH. and neither companies are taking responibility for it!! neither companies are recalling the computers, and the tech said that they won't fix the problem. we could TRY to call them to ask, but likelihood is that they won't since they haven't been, AND IT'S GOING TO COST THE PRICE OF THE COMPUTER TO FIX BECAUSE THE DAMN VIDEO CARD IS BUILT INTO THE LOGIC BOARD!!!
and... uh... can someone pls remind me again? WHY MAC?????

why did mac give me false hope?
Granted... it was a 4 day week, and i only worked on my mac for 2 half days of that time, but none the less, i thought i was actually going to make it through ONE WHOLE week without a crash! .... all i wanted was to add a key frame in flash.... ..... been watching the rainbow wheel of death for ages... i don't want to force quit.... i don't know when i saved last.... sigh...

... still wed.... why does mac insist on having time out?
well, i've taken all i can. switching all ACTUAL work over to my PC. If mac wants to be so stubborn, mac can just be a chat and email computer today. you're taking a time out now mac...
ps. i had to get this PC a couple months ago because mac just wasn't able to cut it... days like today are the reason why PC sits on my desk...

800x600 tga sequence... 170x250 masked hockey player.... nothing open but flash, itunes, mail, firefox and skype.... chug chug chug chug chug.... does it really REALLY take 3 seconds to select one freaking frame??? how the hell am i supposed to do anything.... just rebooted this morning... damn computer. i want to throw it out the freaking window.
restarted.
WHERE THE F DID MY SKYPE ICON IN MY DOCK GO?! how can this thing just forget what apps are in there? .. yes it was there before i restarted...

Tuesday... why can't mac play well with others?
Dave says: btw, what's with all the dang .DS_store files?
fly says: ...mac...
Dave says: Well, tell mac to stop that! :P
why can't mac just be compatible with PC? or should i say anything... prior to mac i got a samsung MP3 player. One of those 4gb YP-P2s. Works great. it plays music, videos, photo slide shows, and super easy to use, plug it into my PC, copy stuff onto it. It has bluetooth, I can stream audio directly to my car stereo (which might i add those FANCY IPHONES DO NOT) then i get mac... and can it recognize my P2? ofcourse not.

Thursday
.... well, i guess it's ok that my mac takes 30 seconds to preview a frame in aftereffects, then renders out random frames, and moves the image where ever it feel like, and when i play back the video the audio is completely out sync, but when i go look at it again the audio is in sync again.... ONLY took me 2 hours and counting to render out a 40 second video... but when i finally got an AVI to export out of aftereffects, (that's right AVI... NOT MOV!) I send it to a co-workers computer (Window's user) through skype.... CRASHES SKYPE! (this time i send a report... "i tried to send a file" (87mb file avi file))
He tries to open it.... it crashes his windows media player! then crashes his explorer!! he tries to delete it! he can't delete it!! THEN IT CRASHES HIS COMPUTER!!! he restarts.... he can't even select the file.... he deletes it by going into DOS....
YES THE CURSE IS SPREADING!

17" MacBook Pro - Phoenix
It's been 5 years since my G5 and since then i have been using PCs. Granted, I've gone through a few upgrades along the way, but since my last laptop was taken from me due to poor project planning, I had a choice. Do i get another PC laptop, or upgrade to a pretty 17" MacBook Pro fully loaded... (Our IT guy is a huge Mac fan) After toying with the idea, and convincing myself that surely this curse MUST be lifted by now, and the machine itself is supposed to be faster. I could run Bootcamp so i can still use Windows... and it is so pretty, and light, and pretty... did i mention pretty?... I was finally talked into going with the Mac... .... ..... uh... bad idea..
Bootcamp didn't lasted more than a couple months on my Mac. Continuous crashes of all applications and extreme lag forced the IT guy to migrate me over to the Mac OS.... I was once again, completely immersed in the Mac platform. I have to say, the Mac OS is SLICK. Spaces (if it worked all the time) is my favorite concept. All the little details to make it look SO good are great. I mean who wouldn't love to work in such a pretty environment?
... This was my trade off....
Within the year that i've had it.. my hard drive completely died on me, tick tick tick tick... squeeeee.... tick tick tick squeeeee...... it was replaced. (thank goodness spore saves all it's game data online! too bad all my work since my previous back up was destroyed!) My video card has done some really strange things...(photo below)

... it was replaced... how many hours i've had to watch the rainbow wheel of death spin ROUND AND ROUND AND ROUND AND ROUND while waiting for files to open, files to save, change from the arrow tool to marquee tool... applications crashing... and how many hundreds of crash reports sent to adobe to the point where i can't even be bothered to anymore.... in it goes again to repair... the logic board was replaced... and that shoulda done it right?? um... no...
i wouldn't be so bold to say EVERY day something happens, but things do happen frequently... best part is... my warrantee has expired! ... maybe my MacBook will finally die and put me out of my misery...

G5
Failing to notice that there was a major power outage that took out half the city, i made my way to work, thinking that it was a little strange that there were so little people out this particular morning. When i stepped into the studio, none of the other artist had made it into the studio yet, but our manager was opening up a box with excitement.... A NEW DUAL PROCESSOR ALUMINUM G5! It was then that i was rewarded for my complete lack of awareness. Since i was the only artist there, it was mine. The other's envy didn't last long when we all realized that my new G5 ran just as fast as their G4s.... At least i was finally up to speed...
Anyone who may be reading is probably wondering if i have had such bad luck with these computers, why i still use them.... pls note that all of these Macs besides my first one were all work computers. And has always been a studio's standard... up until the present day Mac...

All My G4s...
G4 #1
Shiny new White and grey. We thought this upgrade would help the curse. We were wrong.
iMac G4 - Neville
A week before starting at a new studio, a BRAND NEW iMac was purchased for me. The motherboard died the day before i started. Delayed my start date by 2 weeks while they brought it in for repair. Neville knew i was coming...
G4 #2
Shiny new white and grey.... shared the exact same specs as 4 others, ran 2x slower.

G3
My first job was at this great little Graphic Design company who granted me a pretty new frosted white and blue G3! This is when the curse began. All the macs seemed to work fine until i went anywhere near them. One particular memory i have from this time was walking up to one of my co-workers computers and his mac went blank... he shook his mouse, turned on and off his monitor, tapped his keys, and nothin' but a blank screen staring back at us. Even the little power button light was off. As soon as i turned around and took 2 steps away, it turned back on again in the same state it was in before it shut off! This was one example of the things that would happen throughout my experience with Macs.
As for my G3, after a year of wondering why my mac was so slow, and getting my ass kicked at Unreal Tournament, i was finally able convince one of the guys that i really wasn't THAT bad at 1st person shooters, and that my mac really was just slow... cause of the problem? Bad RAM. When the RAM was replaced, I kicked everyone's ass in record time in Unreal since i was actually playing in real time. I decided to leave my mark there, and never played again.

RIP Mac
So, I guess I'll start by going back in time... the following few posts will be about all the Macs that have come and go in my past...
My very first mac... PowerPC 7300
Macs were all the rage back in 1997 when i first started my Graphic Design program. ANYONE who was going to be a Designer HAD to HAVE a MACINTOSH COMPUTER.. psh don't you know?
Dough eyed, i marched into a specialty Mac store i dropped $6000+ down on my very first Mac (and peripherals)... oh PowerPC 7300... you treated me well. How many all-niters you spent up with me, with your 16" glowing screen, an accidentally packaged French keyboard and one button mouse... You were the one Mac that never failed me. You lived on at mom's place when i upgraded to my first PC in 2001.

Macs have driven me to blog....
So after years of being tortured by numerous Mac computers I figured that I would start my very first blog to share my pain caused by these pretty little machines... Maybe someone out there will finally relate and let me know that I am really not alone... while others simply find the humour in these frequent mishaps... but in either case... Welcome to my first blog ever... Why Mac?! Why?!
